Course Description: This class for kindergartners will enable children to recognize letters and sounds of the alphabet, and begin to read short vowel words and simple sentences.

Prerequisites: Children should start the class with the ability to use pencils and crayons for drawing and coloring, and a glue stick to assemble paper pieces.

 

Homework: Students will practice writing letters and words as they progress through the school year.

Storytime A-Z

Basic arithmetic understanding and skills will be developed and honed within this framework.

Course Description: Students will learn about the amazing design and characteristics of marine creatures as part of God's creation. This is a core science curriculum; we will work through the 14 modules over the course of the year. Students will explore water habitats along with marine animal anatomy, physiology and behavior.  We will work to connect the design seen in these incredible creators to the Creator. We will use the note booking journal that accompanies the text.

Learning and Perfecting Cursive Writing

Course Description: Students will learn to the basic concepts that are taught using the IEW method. They will begin to learn how to take notes, summarize key topics, take notes, and learn to create compositions using the Structure and Style Writing Method based on a variety of topics. These lessons cover seven of the nine IEW Units.

Prerequisites: Must know how to write (e.g., holding a pencil, copy words), able to write letters correctly 80%+ of the time, basic reading skills.

 

Homework:  Writing assignments weekly and revisions of assignments as needed. Students will need an “editor” at home to proofread compositions using a provided checklist.

Mixed Media Art

We will go through as many books as we can while trying to find God in each and every Bible reading we do.

Course Description: Using Legends and Leagues West, a Veritas Curriculum, students will learn world geography.  This West program includes North and South America.  Geography will be learned through characters and stories, songs to assist with memorization, comprehension worksheets and maps.  Culture will be emphasized thorough hands-on projects, themed snacks and more.  This is a hands on class.  Students will be asked to read out loud, identify countries on maps and prepare oral presentations.

Homework: Finish class work ( 1 hr or less) and listen to geography songs daily. Students will be asked to do 1-2 presentations throughout the year to include a food dish to share.

Foundation of Art and Design

Game Inventors Workshop

Grades: 6-8

Supplies Needed: Each student will need to purchase: The Game Inventor's Guidebook by Brian Tinsman. It can be purchased on Amazon.  Possibly game parts depending on the games they make.  (Dice, tokens, cards ect...)

Course Description: In the Game Inventors Workshop participants will learn the process about developing and publishing card and board games. Class time will be divided between discussing homework, playing games, and analyzing the games we play. Throughout the year students will be encourage to create their own game, either as an individual or in groups. We will then spend time play testing and refining these games. Warning: Play testing games can be a lot of fun but, if you're not able to take criticism well this may not be the class for you. It takes a lot of work to get a game ready to be published - it's not a quick process. Criticism during play testing should not be taken personal - it is someone else's opinion on what might make your game better. I will try to end the year with a class room interview (through a video chat session) with a game publisher who can give you general advice on how to prepare your game to be presented and submitted to a company for publication.

Prerequisites: None - but a good imagination helps

Homework: Reading about 1 chapter a week in the book.  Working on their games.

Comparative Worldview

Grades: 6-8

Course Description: Comparative Worldview equips students with a biblical worldview and exposes them to the basic beliefs of competing worldviews. Through teaching videos and class discussions, this curriculum sets the stage for critical worldview analysis and biblical worldview integration in every area of life. We will first study our foundation, the Lord, who is Truth and our highest Authority.  Next, we will discuss worship, God as our creator, and who we are in light of Him.  Finally, we will look into what other belief systems put their trust in and how that contrasts with life in Christ. Course Description: Marine Biology at an older middle school level with lots of hands-on projects about ocean life, including dissection labs (at least shark and squid, possibly others).  Will be less rigorous than the upper classmen high school version but great fun for those who are interested in learning more about the amazing oceans God has created. We will also do a 4-6 week unit on freshwater ecology. We will learn how to create a self-sustaining underwater ecosystem.

Fiber Arts from Fiber to Goods

Course Description: Students will learn the difference between fibers, how to spin it and use what they spin in knitting, crochet, and basic weaving. This class will be worth .5 credits towards art or electives.

 

Homework: spending 15 minutes a day working on whatever project we are working on in class.

Drawing Characters and the Stories They Tell

Course Description: In this drawing class, we will go over how to stylize your drawings, how to find your style, and how to determine what makes your drawings yours. We will cover a variety of interesting and useful drawing techniques but will mainly focus on how to develop story-line and character connections, deepening the meaning behind your drawings.

Professional Model Building

Grades: 9-12

Course Description: In this class students will learn how to build models professionally. They will learn about what glues are best for what materials, what paints are best for what materials, how to create engaging dioramas and other aspects of building and displaying models. The goal of this class is that each student will have created a professional looking diorama by the end of the year. I will supply each student with wooden structure kits to complete during classroom time. If the students wish to bring in their own models to work on during class time that is fully acceptable and welcome.  For examples please visit www.besttrains.com ( Look at the premium kits or the just the basics kits).  These are the types of models students will build if they do not bring in their own models.

Course Description: This is a lab to accompany Apologia Biology.  The schedule will follow VSA live Biology, although taking the live course is not required. Apologia also offers self paced videos for those interested in additional resources.  In class work will primarily be experiments with some review of material as time allows.  Experiments will include extensive microscope work and dissections. Course work including reading, note taking, and testing at home is required to participate in experiments.

Course Description: This class will be a structured supplement for high school students currently taking a biology class and lab utilizing the Apologia Exploring Creation With Biology text. Students will be expected to be moving through the book in order to complete the course within our co-op school year. A syllabus aligning with the Biology lab class will be provided to use as a guide. This will be an opportunity to do things like: extra lab experiments, group study for tests and quizzes, do extra activities or worksheets to help reinforce some of the more challenging topics, etc.

Prerequisites: Student must be currently taking Exploring Creation with Biology - Apologia; Some possible classes could be through Veritas Academy or Aplogia classes
